Canopy & Exhaust
The canopy is the acoustic enclosure that houses the set and reduces radiated noise, while the exhaust system carries combustion gas away through a silencer sized for the required attenuation. Flexible bellows isolate engine movement from the fixed pipework.
Acoustic performance is quoted as a sound pressure level at a stated distance, usually 1 m or 7 m. Attenuation comes from the panel construction, the acoustic foam, and the design of the air inlet and outlet paths — which must still pass enough air for cooling at full load.
Exhaust silencers are classified by attenuation: industrial, residential and critical grades. Fitting a higher-grade silencer raises back pressure, which must stay within the engine manufacturer’s limit.
Common questions
Will a canopy reduce my generating set’s output?
Not directly, but a badly designed or obstructed enclosure raises the air-on temperature at the radiator, which can force a derate. Inlet and outlet apertures must be sized for the full-load airflow, and hot air must not be allowed to recirculate.
