AMF Panels

In short

An AMF (auto mains failure) panel monitors the utility supply and automatically starts the generating set, transfers the load, and returns it to mains when supply is restored — then shuts the set down after a cooling run. It combines the set controller, changeover device, protection and metering in one enclosure.

An AMF panel is specified by set rating in kVA, incoming and outgoing breaker sizes, the number of poles, and the controller fitted. Panels are commonly built around a Deep Sea or ComAp module with a motorised changeover or contactor pair.

Because a panel is assembled to the installation rather than bought from a shelf, the ratings and site conditions matter: altitude, ambient temperature, fault level and cable entry all affect the build.

Common questions

What is the difference between an AMF panel and an ATS?

An ATS (automatic transfer switch) only transfers the load between two sources. An AMF panel does that and also starts and stops the generating set, monitors engine parameters, and provides set protection. An AMF panel usually contains an ATS or a contactor-based changeover within it.

How do I size an AMF panel?

Size to the generating set rating in kVA and the full-load current at the site voltage, then select breakers with an appropriate breaking capacity for the prospective fault level. A 125 kVA set at 415 V three-phase draws roughly 174 A at full load, so the panel and changeover must be rated above that with a margin.

Can an AMF panel be retrofitted to an existing set?

Yes, provided the set has the required engine sensors and a starting circuit the controller can drive — typically oil pressure, coolant temperature, a charge alternator or magnetic pickup for speed sensing, and a two-wire start. Older sets sometimes need sensors added.
