The cooling and fuel systems keep a generating set within its rated operating envelope: the radiator and fan reject heat at full load, while lift pumps, filters, water separators and the day tank deliver clean fuel at the required pressure.
Genset radiators are sized for continuous full-load heat rejection at the site ambient, which is why a set derated for high ambient temperature or altitude may need a larger core than the standard build.
Fuel contamination is the most common cause of avoidable genset failure. Water separators and correctly serviced filters matter more on standby sets, where fuel sits in the tank for long periods.
Common questions
Why does my generating set overheat at full load but not at part load?
That pattern points to insufficient heat rejection rather than a blockage in the circuit — typically a fouled or partially blocked radiator core, a failing fan drive, recirculation of hot air in the enclosure, or an ambient temperature above the set’s design point. A thermostat fault usually shows across the load range, not only at the top.
